Primobolan (Methenolone Enanthate): What It Is and Isn’t
Primobolan has a reputation as the gentle steroid. Some of that is earned and some is marketing. Here is what methenolone enanthate actually does and where the risks still sit.

Primobolan is the trade name that stuck to methenolone. The injectable form, methenolone enanthate, was developed in the early 1960s and used in medicine for anemia and muscle wasting before being withdrawn from most markets. It kept a following because of its reputation for producing lean, dry gains with few side effects.
What methenolone is
Methenolone is a derivative of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Like other DHT-derived compounds, it cannot be converted into estrogen by the aromatase enzyme. That single fact explains much of its reputation: no estrogenic water retention and very little risk of breast tissue growth from estrogen.
Why it is called mild
Methenolone binds the androgen receptor less strongly than testosterone or nandrolone, so each milligram does less. People who use it typically need larger amounts to notice much, and the changes come slowly. That slowness, combined with no estrogen conversion, is most of what “mild” means in practice.
Side effects that remain
- Suppression. It still shuts down your own testosterone and sperm production, just as other anabolic steroids do.
- Cholesterol. HDL falls. Oral methenolone affects the liver’s handling of lipids more, but the injectable is not exempt.
- Hair and skin. As a DHT derivative it can speed up male-pattern hair loss in people prone to it and cause acne.
- Low estrogen effects when used alone. Without testosterone or another source of estrogen, joint aches, low libido and low mood can follow.
Where methenolone came from
Methenolone was developed by Schering in the early 1960s and marketed as Primobolan, both as an oral acetate tablet and as the enanthate injection known as Primobolan Depot. It was used for anemia, for weight loss after illness and, in some countries, in premature infants and children with growth problems. As newer treatments arrived, most markets withdrew it. Its reputation in sport grew after it was linked to well-known athletes who preferred a compound with few visible side effects.
How methenolone compares
Methenolone enanthate
- No estrogen conversion
- Weak per milligram
- Slow, modest changes
- Expensive and often faked
Testosterone enanthate
- Converts to estrogen and DHT
- Stronger per milligram
- Faster changes, more water
- Cheap and widely made
Drostanolone
- No estrogen conversion
- More androgenic
- Harder look, more hair loss risk
- Similar suppression
Who should avoid it
Men with a family history of early hair loss, anyone with low HDL or a family history of heart disease, men trying to start a family soon, and anyone under 21. Women should understand that even a mild androgen can permanently deepen the voice, and that the only safeguard is to stop at the first change.
Spotting fake or underdosed product
Because genuine methenolone is costly, it is one of the compounds most often substituted. Warning signs include a price far below the market, a vial with no batch number or expiry date, labels with spelling errors, oil that is cloudy at room temperature, and sellers who cannot say who manufactured it. Buy from a supplier that names the brand and lists strength and pack size on every product, and check that the label matches what arrives.
After stopping
The enanthate ester clears over two to three weeks. Natural testosterone production then has to restart, which usually takes weeks to months. Testing testosterone and LH six to eight weeks after the last injection gives a clear picture, and a lipid panel shows whether HDL has returned to its earlier level.
What to test
A lipid panel, complete blood count, liver enzymes, total testosterone, estradiol and LH/FSH before starting and after stopping give a clear picture. Blood pressure is worth tracking at home.
Legal status in Canada
Methenolone is a Schedule IV anabolic steroid under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Possession for personal use is not an offence under the Act; selling, importing and exporting without authorisation are. It is not marketed as a medicine in Canada, and it is banned in sport.

Questions
Is Primobolan safe for women?
No anabolic steroid is safe for women in the sense of being free of masculinising effects. Methenolone is milder than most, but voice changes and body hair can still appear and may be permanent.
Why is it so expensive?
Methenolone is costly to make, and genuine pharmaceutical versions became scarce after the original injectable was withdrawn in many markets.
Does Primobolan cause water retention?
Very little, because it does not aromatise. Most people notice a drier look compared with testosterone or nandrolone.
Is there an oral form?
Yes, methenolone acetate exists as a tablet. It is shorter acting and weaker; the injectable enanthate is the more common form.
