Anavar (Oxandrolone): Why It Is Called Mild and What That Misses
Oxandrolone has the gentlest reputation of any oral steroid. It earned some of that in hospitals. It still lowers HDL, still suppresses testosterone and is still taken as a 17-alpha-alkylated tablet.

Oxandrolone, sold for decades as Anavar and later Oxandrin, was prescribed to help patients regain weight lost after major surgery, severe burns or long illness. Hospitals used it because it was relatively well tolerated. That medical history is the root of its reputation as the mild steroid.
What oxandrolone is
Oxandrolone is a DHT derivative in which one carbon in the steroid ring is replaced by an oxygen atom. It is 17-alpha-alkylated so it survives as a tablet, and it does not convert to estrogen.
The label listed 2.5 to 20 mg a day in two to four divided doses, usually for two to four weeks, with lower amounts for children and older adults.
What “mild” really means
- It is less androgenic than testosterone, so acne, hair loss and masculinising effects are less likely at the same amount.
- It strains the liver less than Dianabol or Anadrol, partly because more of it is cleared by the kidneys.
- It causes little water retention.
What mild does not mean: oxandrolone lowers HDL cholesterol substantially, sometimes by half, and that effect grows with amount and time. It also suppresses natural testosterone in men, and it remains a 17-alpha-alkylated oral with a real, if lower, risk of liver injury.
Women and oxandrolone
Oxandrolone is the anabolic steroid most commonly used by women, and the only one in our range commonly used by women. Even at modest amounts, a deeper voice, facial and body hair, clitoral enlargement and menstrual changes can occur. Voice changes in particular may not reverse after stopping. Stopping at the very first sign is the only real safeguard.
A short history
Oxandrolone was first made by Searle in 1962. Over the following decades it was prescribed for weight regain after surgery, infection or trauma, for bone pain linked to osteoporosis, for Turner syndrome and for boys with delayed growth. In burns units it became a standard treatment because it helped patients rebuild lost muscle. Its main brand in the United States was discontinued in 2023, after regulators concluded that its benefits no longer clearly outweighed its risks for the approved uses.
Who should avoid oxandrolone
- Anyone with low HDL, high LDL or a family history of early heart disease
- People with liver or kidney disease
- Men with prostate or breast cancer, and women with breast cancer or high calcium levels
- Anyone pregnant or trying to conceive
- Anyone under 21
Interactions
Oxandrolone markedly increases the effect of warfarin; the label warned that the blood thinner dose may need large reductions. It can also lower blood sugar in people taking insulin or diabetes tablets. Alcohol and other liver-processed drugs add strain.
Women: what to watch for
- Hoarseness or a deeper voice, even slightly
- New hair on the face, chest or abdomen
- Acne or oily skin
- Changes in the menstrual cycle
- Clitoral enlargement
Voice changes and clitoral enlargement can be permanent. Stopping at the first sign is the only reliable way to limit them.
Myths and facts
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Anavar does not suppress testosterone | It does, more at higher amounts and longer runs. |
| Anavar is liver-safe | It is the gentlest 17-alpha-alkylated oral, but liver injury has been reported. |
| Women can use it without risk | Masculinising effects are less likely than with other steroids, not impossible. |
Bloodwork
Lipid panel, liver enzymes, total testosterone and LH (men), a complete blood count and blood pressure. For women, any voice or menstrual change is itself a signal to stop.
Legal status
Oxandrolone is a Schedule IV anabolic steroid. Personal possession is not an offence under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; selling, importing and exporting without authorisation are. It is banned in sport.

Questions
Why is Anavar used by women?
It is weakly androgenic compared with most steroids, so masculinising effects are less likely at low amounts. Less likely is not impossible: voice changes and body hair can be permanent.
Does Anavar need post-cycle therapy?
It suppresses natural testosterone in men, more at higher amounts. Recovery is usually faster than after injectables, but bloodwork after stopping shows whether it has happened.
Why is Anavar expensive?
It is costlier to make than most steroids, and genuine product is in high demand.
Was oxandrolone withdrawn?
The US brand was discontinued in 2023 after the FDA questioned whether its benefits outweighed its risks for its approved uses.
