Overview

Anavar is oxandrolone, an oral DHT derivative first approved to help patients regain weight after surgery, burns or long illness. It is one of the most studied oral anabolic steroids in clinical medicine.

How it works

Oxandrolone activates androgen receptors and is resistant to liver breakdown thanks to a chemical change at the 17-alpha position. It does not convert to estradiol, but it still lowers natural testosterone and strongly lowers HDL cholesterol.

Clinical reference

The original Oxandrin label used 2.5 to 20 mg a day, split into two to four doses, for two to four weeks, repeated only when needed. The United States withdrew the product in 2023.

Combinations and interactions

Prescribed or used alongside

In burn and wasting care, oxandrolone was given with a high-protein diet and close monitoring of liver enzymes.
Combining it with another oral compound multiplies liver strain.

Drug interactions

Warfarin: oxandrolone sharply raises the effect of warfarin; the label warns of serious bleeding.
Diabetes medicines: blood sugar may fall.

Liver strain

Raised liver enzymes are common; rare cases of liver tumours and peliosis hepatis are described with 17-alpha-alkylated steroids.

HDL cholesterol

Oral steroids lower HDL more than most injectables.

Suppression

Even at clinical amounts natural testosterone falls.

Virilisation in women

Voice deepening and other masculine changes can be permanent.

Canadian legal status

Anabolic steroids are listed in Schedule IV of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Simple possession of a Schedule IV substance is not an offence under the Act; selling, importing or exporting one without authorisation is.
