Equipoise (Boldenone Undecylenate): Slow, Steady and Misunderstood
Equipoise was made for horses. In people it is known for slow, steady effects and a strong push on red blood cell counts, which is the risk most users miss.

Equipoise is the veterinary brand name for boldenone undecylenate, developed to improve appetite, condition and muscle in horses. It has never been approved for people. In human use it has a reputation for slow, quality gains and few side effects, but that reputation leaves out its biggest risk.
What boldenone is
Boldenone is testosterone with one extra double bond. That change reduces how much of it is turned into estrogen, roughly half as much as testosterone, and makes it somewhat less androgenic. The undecylenate ester has eleven carbons, making it one of the slowest-releasing esters in common use.
The red blood cell problem
Boldenone is known among users for pushing up red blood cell counts more than most steroids. More red cells make the blood thicker. A hematocrit above roughly 54 percent raises the risk of clots, strokes and heart attacks, and it can creep up quietly over weeks without obvious symptoms. Headaches, a flushed face and feeling short of breath on stairs can be signs.
Other side effects
- Suppression: natural testosterone and sperm production stop, and recovery is slow because the ester lingers.
- Blood pressure and cholesterol: moderate rises in blood pressure and lower HDL.
- Anxiety: some users report anxiety or restlessness.
- Estrogen effects: lower than with testosterone but possible.
Where boldenone came from
Boldenone was investigated by Ciba in the 1950s, and the undecylenate ester was later developed for veterinary use. Equipoise became the best-known brand, used to improve appetite and muscle in horses that were run down or recovering from illness. It has never been approved for people anywhere. Human use developed in bodybuilding circles from the 1980s onward, often with the belief that a veterinary product was gentler than human medicines, which is not supported by evidence.
How boldenone compares with testosterone
Boldenone undecylenate
- About half the estrogen conversion
- Very slow ester, about 14 days
- Strong effect on red blood cells
- Veterinary only
Testosterone enanthate
- Full estrogen conversion
- About 4 to 5 days
- Raises red cells too
- Decades of human data
Who should avoid it
Anyone whose hematocrit or hemoglobin is already high, anyone with a history of clots or stroke in the family, people with high blood pressure or anxiety, men trying to conceive, women and anyone under 21. People living at high altitude, who naturally have higher red cell counts, should be especially cautious.
Signs your blood is getting too thick
- Headaches that are new or more frequent
- A red, flushed face or red palms
- Dizziness, blurred vision or ringing in the ears
- Shortness of breath on light exertion
- Itching after a hot shower
None of these is specific, and many people have no symptoms at all, which is why a complete blood count is the real check. Sudden weakness on one side, slurred speech or chest pain are emergencies.
After stopping
With a half-life near two weeks, boldenone takes well over a month to clear. Red cell counts fall back slowly as old cells are replaced, over about three to four months. Natural testosterone production restarts only once levels have dropped, so recovery is later than after shorter esters.
Bloodwork
Complete blood count, lipid panel, liver and kidney markers, total testosterone, estradiol and blood pressure. Testing again several weeks after the last injection shows how quickly counts return to normal.
Legal status
Boldenone is Schedule IV under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Personal possession is not an offence under the Act; selling, importing or exporting without authorisation is. It is banned in sport.

Questions
Why does Equipoise increase appetite?
Users widely report a stronger appetite on boldenone. The mechanism is not well studied in people, but it is one of the most consistent anecdotal effects.
How long does boldenone take to work?
Because the undecylenate ester is so long, blood levels take several weeks to reach a steady state.
Can I donate blood to lower hematocrit?
Canadian Blood Services screens donors and may not accept donations from people using steroids. Discuss raised hematocrit with a doctor rather than managing it yourself.
Is boldenone detectable for long?
Yes. Its long ester and metabolites mean detection windows of months in sport testing.
